Why Buy Hawaiian?
Hawaii is afforded year-round near perfect growing conditions that ensures distinguished quality and expansive availability. Hawaiian growers are able to achieve superior plants in less time due to the climate and their growing techniques.
Hawaiian grown plants begin their life as field stock maturing in full sun increasing the plants metabolism to support its rapid growth and caliper development. The cane is cut in the field and the lower foliage is removed to ensure the plant does not transpire more moisture than it can take in prior to root system development. The stock cane is then taken to the shade houses where it will be graded for uniformity and quality before being placed into a cinder/peat soil media. This initial grading guaranties that all finished products are up to the high standards required by interiorscapers and are of the quality that we know and expect from Hawaiian material.
The difference is in the potting media-
Hawaiian growers pot up their field stock in volcanic cinders and canadian sphagnum peats. They use these mixes because of their porosity, waterholding and cation-exchange capacity, lack of decomposition and longevity. The pore space is very important to the plants root system as it allows more air to reach the root, a must given Hawaii's clock-work daily rains.
Non-cinder soil mixtures tend to have much larger quantities of peat and organic materials such as bark and perlite that tend to break down much faster over time. Once the soil decomposes beyond a certain point the roots loose their ability to support and stabilize the cane and foliage. Eventually the plant will need to be replaced because of its inability to support itself. A better soil mixture will exponentially increase the interior longevity of the plant.
This superior potting media enables the plants to quickly establish roots which in turn expidite the production of foliage. It takes only three months from the time the cane is cut and potted to develop its root structure and push out new growth allowing for a consistient flow of available plant material. The cane is inspected and graded prior to being potted and inspected prior to shipment ensuring that you never receive a B-grade item.
